Cartography and Geospatial Information Systems

Strata360 Internet Mapping Services
The last few years has witnessed the transformation of Internet and interactive mapping and its applications. This transformation has been spearheaded in part by a significant increase in computer power, high-speed internet, higher resolution sensors for acquisition of satellite images and the continuing expansion of and integration with, GIS and GPS technologies. It has also been spearheaded by new realities facing a wide range of potential end users and as a consequence by their demands for gaining access to geospatial information that can be collected and delivered more efficiently and economically to targeted audiences.

Although we at Strata360 continue to develop our expertise in the fields of “traditional” maps, GIS and earth observation imagery, our on the ground often community-based experience has clearly identified the importance of enhancing the power of printed maps and other geospatial information. Recent projects associated with the Canadian Space Agency, the Mekong River Commission and most recently the European Space Agency as well as participation in the Natural Resources Canada GeoConnections program have provided the opportunity for Strata360 to actively engage in the development of both methodologies and applications for innovative Internet mapping and information portals for delivering geospatial information for use by a wide range of clients worldwide.

Internet Mapping
Our Web applications contain interactive maps through integration of different data types such as geographic databases, satellite imagery, topographic maps and thematic data layers and WMS services. Through Internet cartography users can visualize maps at any scale, geographic extent and any combination of layers.

Geospatial Portals and Application Development
We develop Web-based information systems as structured communication and data management systems in order to provide maps and information services to end users with the goal to support activities such as planning, development, decision making and monitoring.

Geospatial Portals provide user-friendly access tools to consult and build databases through the Web. End users with limited GIS skills require only a Web browser to view data and perform basic map making activities.

All our applications are built according to Open GIS standards and make use of distributed data sources over the Internet enabling data sharing and contributing to the CGDI spatial data infrastructure.

Web Hosting of Map Services
Strata360 is a licensed Application Service Provider (ASP) for ESRI’s Server software. This enables us to host GIS-based Internet applications and maps on our servers so clients are not required to purchase any software or hardware or have any mapping expertise. This solution provides a quick way to cost-efficiently deploy mapping sites on the Internet at no start-up cost.

Our Technological Environment
The Strata360 facility in Montreal is equipped with the most up-to-date computer technology that is required to deliver state of the technology Internet-based GIS.

Our software configuration is based on ESRI software tools that offer multi-format flexibility, reliability and are well supported.

Our new server technology is powered by a combination of Linux and Windows 2003 servers to offer maximum development flexibility and security.

The Strata360 system provides:
- Browser-based access to GIS
- Easy integration with other distributed data sources on the Internet
- Support for interoperability standards
- Ability to create custom applications
- Lower costs through centrally managed GIS that can support many users
